Public Test: Exp. Rework

Shinohara

Recommended Posts

While I am a big fan of the exp share , I must say that the rework with the current exp gain through the kanto story feels rather lack luster. Even though I was mainly only used Gyarados (like everyone else and I am aware that it has a low exp gain) I was constantly under the opponents level cap starting at the second gym. This felt especially unbalanced once I reached the 8th gym and victory road. In my opinion trainers should have had more exp gain pokemon and not so many unevolved since that made me lose out on a lot of exp. while it was manageable with my knowledge and a bit of cheese I can see a newer player struggle and grind for hours on wild pokemon especially when he uses more than 1 pokemon as many players do. I am missing before 6 cause I sadly forgot it but my gyarados was approx 1.5-2 levels lower. Also I dont have a before 8 cause its useless.1532226117_after1.PNG.80652d3431816916276b09dfcd3d0b4d.PNG361598826_before1.PNG.510cc34319a2ded39bac27a812255f65.PNG

Feedback:

Spoiler

- having EXP share early on seems to be a really good addition since it really helps leveling your pokemon
- being able to get EXP (and EV) from catching pokemon is overall not a bad addition but it won't help casual players a lot I'd guess. Nonetheless an addition that helps a bit early on. For lategame it probably isn't bad, considering the EV gain aswell
- being able to evolve your pokemon is a really good change, especially for the more casual player. It makes the game more fun and makes the player not in need of "cheese" strats.
lategame EXP throughout the entire story needs to be looked at. I mostly trained only 1 or 2 pokemon at the same time, barely skipped any trainer fights but yet had problems beating some fights without using "cheese" strats like sturdy+t-wave, leech seed+sturdy, or any classic setup set. (Gyarados, Feraligatr, Infernape, Masquerain)
training more than 1 or 2 pokemon without needing to grind a lot of EXP in the wild is impossible, even with the EXP share. Which is especially problematic in Johto and Sinnoh, where the wild pokemon level range is really bad for the mid to lategame.
for Sinnoh especially I only trained 1 single pokemon the entire story and (-spd nature for sure was a big part of it) had issues winning some story relevant fights. The level-range after gym 6/7 until gym8 is quite challenging, really grindy if you are training an entire team of 6 pokemon.

Region Feedback:

Kanto: overall a good level range, the level range from gym 6-8 doesn't change a lot, barely good spots to level. Kanto Victory Road however has a big jump on levels. I trained only 1 pokemon after half of the story and yet got outleveled by some NPCs during Victory Road.

Johto: the easiest region out of the current 4. The level ranges up until the 6th gym are good, the level jumps after the 6th gym until 7th gym are a bit bigger and might be a bit too harsh for casual player who train 6 pokemon. The biggest problem this region has are the level ranges of the wild pokemon, barely changing and way too low from 5th gym until you hit Dragons Den.

Hoenn: the level range between wild pokemon and NPCs are a little bit off, the best example being Victory Road. Really hard to level more than 2 pokemon while keeping up with the NPC levels.

Sinnoh: good level ranges up until the 4th gym. After that there are a lot of skippable trainers which might be a bit problematic for someone who is training an entire team. The lake section between the 6th and 7th gym is a good way to level your pokemon since the level jump isn't too big. However some fights vs the commanders and the HQ in Veilstone seem to have a bigger level jump which might need more grind for a full 6 pokemon team. The rest up until the E4 seems fine.

TLDR:

Spoiler

EXP share is a really good addition for the early game, especially for the casual/new player. (wasn't able to test a lot for the lategame yet)
Lategame EXP throughout the entire story needs to be looked at, also some wild pokemon level ranges from mid to lategame.

It took me 9 hours to complete 5 gyms, not my proudest momment tbh, i think it was easier to beat on the main server.

I love the Exp share item, i have allways wanted it in this game since i started playing.

I would up xp drops from wild pokemons just a little bit, other then that i think the game is better then the main server right now.

Kanto -

Kanto was pretty generous with experience up until the first gym, then everything went down hill after that. By the time I completed Mt. Moon, Nugget Bridge, Route 24, and Route 25, I only had 2 pokemon in the mid 20s, yeah.... I don't think it's the exp shares fault, but rather the lack of experience itself between gyms especially in the late game. You simply can't level up past the mid to late 50s without giving up half your life for it. Yes, I messed up on my screenshots for both Kanto and Johto, but that doesn't really matter much when all you guys did was just change the system to Generation 7's experience system without even modifying any of the trainers pokemon which was just lazy if I'm being honest. I began using cheese strategies after the 5th gym because I wasn't going to spend more hours than necessary to train up a full team of 6 just to beat Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni.

Johto -

As for Johto? God, it was horrible. I trained my Totodile and nothing else. I barely outleveled the gym leaders up until the 4th or 5th gym where I began to use healings, I didn't know Feraligatr got agility + swords dance so I just used the Gyarados strategy again. I'm saying this because the gym leaders are way too strong. You balanced the experience to make it easier for new players to not get screwed by evolving their pokemon early, and then screw them again by either making them grind a lot just to stand a chance against the latter half of the region or use the defacto sweeper Gyarados to beat them. I screwed up my screenshots, yes, but the feedback matters more than them.

As for the exp. share, I like it, it was a useful item to level up my Zubat in Kanto and Magikarp in Johto, the only problem in my opinion was the lack exp. from wild pokemon.

I tryed the story with only one pokemon on kanto and its reduce strongly the difficulty of the story

you get so much level advantage that allow you to skip some trainer since you already 6-0 every gym leader without any reflexion just by clicking straight since it was a gyarados it even allow to destroy the E4 without any difficulty its a bit sad because currently you so have too much desadvantage by building a full team for the story

like kanto rushing the story with only 1 pokemon give you too much advantage you got so much level advantage too early in the game and allow to ohko every trainers / gym leader even without set up pokemon the only gym where i could have some trouble since i didnt do all trainer avaible could be the last gym but since i was able to catch azumarill or clefable just behind the gym that allow me to destroy the gym without my trained pokemon the problem with this its doing story with too much pokemon can be very difficult and not enjoyable and doing this with only one pokemon make the story so easy but its not enjoyable too

Hoenn Feedback

Spoiler

Hoenn is way more easy than other regions for me because of some points

1: Swampert is way too good with surf/ice beam/earthquake that allow to Ohko too much things

2: there is not good wild spot for xp but there is so much trainers npc on the map

with these points you can just doing trainers with swampert and getting overleveled its more significativ than others regions

in this region un gived the exp share on nincada too see wich level they will reach at the end of the region and even with xp share swampert reach 80 (With12 rcs)  and Nincada 75 (only exp share no a single fight)

this can be possible only at hoenn i guess since its probably the region with the most trainer with a "decent" amount of experience

Global feedback

Spoiler

the new experience system give you a very good early and mid game it can be more difficult in the late game but if you took a good pokemon and give to him all the experience available in the region you can juste remove the difficulty of the region and unlucky this is only possible with one high level pokemon

if you want to have a full team to play the story you will just make the game almost unplayable

test gym battles_220927_175454.pdf

Before and after gym battles Kanto region , on 3 of the gyms I forgot to take a ss before but overall experience was good , it requires a little more grind than usual giving new players who evolve instantly a chance to level up more comfortably. some battles were a little tough so had to attempt it twice sometimes.  it'll require newer players to grind a lot more in order to beat the gyms comfortably
